چکیده

Most of existing earthquake early-warning systems are regional or on-site systems. A new concept is the integration of these approaches for the definition of alert levels and the estimation of the earthquake potential damage zone (PDZ). The key element of the method is the real-time, simultaneous measurement of initial peak displacement (Pd) and period parameter (τ c) in a 3-s window after the first P-wave arrival time at accelerometer stations located at increasing distances from the epicenter. As for the on-site approach, the recorded values of Pd and τ c are compared to threshold values, which are set for a minimum magnitude M 6 and instrumental intensity IMM VII, according to empirical regression analysis of strong-motion data from different seismic regions. At each recording site the alert level is assigned based on a decisional table with four entries defined by threshold values of the parameters Pd and τ c. A regional network of stations provides the event location and transmits the information about the alert levels recorded at near-source stations to more distant sites, before the arrival of the most destructive phase. We present the results of performance tests of this method using ten M >6 Japanese earthquakes that occurred in the period 2000–2009 and propose a very robust methodology for mapping the PDZ in the first seconds after a moderate-to-large earthquake. The studied cases displayed a very good matching between the rapidly predicted earthquake PDZ inferred from initial P-peak displacement amplitudes and the instrumental intensity map, the latter being mapped after the event, using peak ground velocity and/or acceleration, or from field macroseismic surveys. Single station estimation of earthquake early warning parameters by using amplitude envelope curve

In this study, new empirical relationships to estimate key parameters in Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system including magnitude, epicentral distance and Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) are introduced based on features of the initial portion of P-wave’s amplitude envelope curve. For this purpose, 226 time series recorded by bore-hole accelerometers of Japanese KiK-net are processed for earthq...

Short Note On the Properties of Predominant-Period Estimators for Earthquake Early Warning

Recent results suggest that measurements of the average “predominant period,” sp, of an earthquake using the first few seconds of P waves provide a rapid approximate estimate of magnitude that can be used for earthquake early warning systems. Although these prior studies demonstrate the empirical value of such an approach, we here examine the theoretical properties of the predominant period est...

A threshold-based earthquake early warning using dense accelerometer networks

S U M M A R Y Most earthquake early warning systems (EEWS) developed so far are conceived as either ‘regional’ (network-based) or ‘on-site’ (stand-alone) systems. The recent implementation of nationwide, high dynamic range, dense accelerometer arrays makes now available, potentially in real time, unsaturated waveforms of moderate-to-large magnitude earthquakes recorded at very short epicentral ...

Evaluating and Improving the ElarmS Earthquake Early Warning Algorithm

Earthquake Alarm Systems, or ElarmS, is a network-based earthquake early warning (EEW) system developed in California. This dissertation concerns the transition of ElarmS from research prototype to production-grade code. We test ElarmS' performance for large earthquakes with an extensive dataset of large events from Japan. Using the Japanese dataset and results, we develop a statistical error m...

Development of an integrated onsite earthquake early warning system and test deployment in Zhaotong, China

Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) is one of the effective ways to mitigate earthquake damage and can provide few seconds to tens of seconds of advanced warning time of impending ground motions, allowing for mitigation measures to be taken in the short term. In the present paper, we develop an integrated onsite EEWS called EDAS-MAS, which is based on the physical characteristics of the P-wa...
